Did you know? Velcro was invented in 1941 by George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer. De Mestral was hiking in the Alps when he noticed that the burrs from burdock plants had attached themselves to his clothes. He examined the burrs under a microscope and saw that they were covered in tiny hooks. He realized that he could use this same principle to create a new type of fastener.
De Mestral called his new invention “Velcro,” which is a combination of the French words “velours” (velvet) and “crochet” (hook). Velcro was first marketed in 1955, and it quickly became popular for a variety of applications.
